Double Knitting Shaping (Increases and Decreases)

Shaping in double knitting is a little tricky, because you need to shape twice – on front (knit) and back (purl) side of the double-knit fabric. It’s also confusing because right-leaning shaping on the front appears left-leaning on the reverse side.

I recently uploaded some videos on my YouTube page as a tutorial for the Rising Steam Scarf pattern. The scarf incorporates increases and decreases to create curvy lines between color changes.

The image below shows how the curvy lines are created by combining a decrease of one color and the increase of the opposite color every 4 to 8 rows.

As the images below show, each number corresponds to a double-knit pair of shaping. For example, “1” is a right-leaning increase, but when you flip the fabric to see the mirrored image on the reverse side, it appears left-leaning.

These shaping techniques elevate colorwork’s possibility of expression.
